Tone Deaf 04:10
Siren screams like it's just been born Masters blow their warnings out the end of the horn Clouds roll in with the coming storm Fear is the enemy of all that is golden Crushing boom of violence and the streets are on fire Try to drown each other out just to preach to the choir You cannot trust a thing that comes down the wire From a distance i watch it all unfolding At the end of all the searching there's nothing to be found It rings out like church bells and you never hear a sound Half a million years ago we started crawling towards the sun Somewhere it was decided that you must control someone You have to conquer something to prove that you have one And anything of value at the bottom must be stolen So you sailed across the ocean to see what you could find You brought the seeds of sin to plant in their mind Burning everything in sight leaving nothing behind Fire up that engine and keep that train a rollin' They rattle the cages and you won't give an inch of ground Their banging drums in your ears and you never hear a sound The thing it must be done, but it won't be done by you Build the walls around your castle to hide the things you do You rip sons from their mothers anything to get you through It's a cold wind that leaves a body swinging It's not the teeth, the hair, the skin and the bones It's not the fools who play their games behind the thrones It's that little light inside that burns when we're alone What is freedom if you can't be out there singing Notes fly out in all directions and they just fall to the ground Screams of desperation and you never hear a sound

It's raining down like tears from the Queen of Hearts But their ain't nothing about this morning that could pull me apart I've got a box of little memories I pull out on rainy days The little pieces of a life that you never throw away What we remember like barely breathing like summer laughter like never leaving What we remember like the last chance like the danger like the first glance I buried knives next to a tree outside my school when I was a kid I couldn't give you any reasons now for half the things I did I've always been a little lonesome that's just my way Voices calling but I don't know what their trying to say What we remember like hardly sleeping Like a sunrise like we were bleeding What we remember like sirens wailing Like we were running like we were failing Left alone like folded cards stuffed in my pocket The way your hair fell down so long Along the water where we created A simple truth that carries on

Whiplash 03:28
Winter sliding teenage riding ambush hiding stop deciding It all seems to catch me from behind Bones are breaking hips are shaking gamblers faking no mistaking It's getting darker as I follow the blind The ice is cracking dogs are tracking counter stacking keep attacking It seems like they're coming from all sides Tears are frozen clouds are swollen grim devotion set in motion And the judge says all objections are denied The man of many faces always leaves traces in every place he's been I should have started running but I never saw it coming and now I'm fighting my way out of here again Engine stalling oilmen brawling cities sprawling children calling It's their mothers who start to disappear Clutch is slipping clowns are tripping scales are tipping flag is ripping Sold out by the auctioneer Brides are showing horns are blowing secrets flowing game ongoing Nobody sitting here is gonna fold Captain staring boy is swearing queens are pairing all declaring that these walls are never gonna hold The man of many faces always leaves traces in every place he's been I should have started running but I never saw it coming and now I'm fighting my way out of here again Ghosts are crying beggars buying horses flying dreams are dying There's laughter in the corner of the room Bulls are crashing whips are lashing doors are smashing diamonds flashing Try to fight their way inside the womb Falling ceiling triple dealing open stealing suckers kneeling Crawling at the alter of the fool Shameless talking whispers mocking windows locking nothing shocking as you head into the Valley of the Mule The man of many faces always leaves traces in every place he's been I should have started running but I never saw it coming and now I'm fighting my way out of here again

about

Recorded in the St. Agnes Church over four hot summer days in Terlingua. Produced by Bill Palmer. Nights were spent out in the desert under the full moon. The songs were all written in the early days of the pandemic shutdown, and I felt a need to record the moment in time
